Why May 4? The Second World War left an indelible mark on the Dutch. Though memories of the Second World War are gradually fading, this war still represents a watershed in our history. It continues to occupy our thoughts and conversations and remains a constant reminder of the fragility of civilization and democracy.
Canada was one of the key Allies in the fight against the Nazi occupation of Europe during the Second World War. Ten percent of the Canadian population was in uniform; most Canadian families had someone serving in the Canadian forces. Canadian troops, together with other Allied forces, played a pivotal role in the liberation of the Netherlands, but not without cost. During the nine months that it took to liberate the Netherlands, more than 7600 Canadian soldiers lost their lives
